Pair Cheese with White – not Red

Jul 29, 2020 | Vintages

Wine and cheese are two of the great culinary pleasures and white wine partners better with many types of cheese. The subtle fruit and nut flavors in Chardonnay shines with the soft and creamy cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or Gruyere. Champagne, Prosecco or any sparkling wine is also a favorite with creamy cheeses. The bubbles in Prosecco cut through the saltiness of Parmesan, making it a popular pairing. The acidity of Pinot Grigio matches well with fresh mozzarella while cream ricotta should be paired with Riesling. Goat cheese and Sauvignon Blanc are a match made in heaven, but Chenin Blanc, Semillon or a dry Riesling are good alternatives. The spicy aroma of Gewürtztrainer is a match for the strong smelling cheeses such as Munster, Livarot or Stinking Bishop, but Viognier and an off dry Riesling also work well.
